Shepton Town Council recently held its first full meeting, after the elections earlier in May, and welcomed its new Councillors, including co-opted members Rob Heaton and Jon Ducker. Matt Harrison was re-elected as Chair of the Council, and Gavin Mayall was elected Vice Chair. Councillors discussed several issues facing the market town, including overcoming the pandemic, addressing the cost-of-living crisis, and embracing the opportunities and managing the challenges from the local government reorganisation that will see Somerset’s five district councils being replaced by a single unitary authority in April 2023.
However, Cllr Harrison was optimistic and said that, ‘Shepton Mallet Town Council will continue to deliver an ambitious investment programme . Last year, we brought in some key physical investment improvements and cultural events. In the near future, we look forward to relaunching Collett Park Day, installing our new wayfaring signs, launching our new town website and taking the new Collett play park project out to tender. We have the strength of a motivated council and experienced and dedicated officers behind us It’s going to be a busy but exciting 12 months for the council.’
