On Friday, the town council heard about the imminent closure of Shepton Mallet Leisure Centre. We had no forward notice of this. The Leisure Centre is independent and the town council has no involvement in its owning or operating.
Many town councillors are shocked and saddened by this news. When the first Covid lockdown was implemented, we financially helped the facility to stay open because we believed it was of such vital importance to the town’s physical and mental health and well-being. I am meeting with the operator to learn more about the current situation later this week.
I am hosting an open meeting next Wednesday 18 January at 7pm in Shepton Mallet Library to:
1. Bring residents up to speed with the situation as much as I am able
2. Host an open discussion with interested parties about how to effectively provide leisure facilities in the town in the future
Tonight’s Full Council meeting is not discussing this subject. The Leisure Centre will be discussed at the open meeting next Wednesday.
Many thanks, Matt.
Matt Harrison, Chair of Shepton Mallet Town Council
