Tell us a little bit about yourself (100 words max)

I have been an independent town councillor since 2019. I live in Shepton Mallet with my husband and 2 daughters and next door to my parents and sister. I currently work at the University of Bath as a Dignity and Respect Investigator. I am involved in many community activities including setting up and being part of the team for our roller disco in Shepton Mallet. I plan to run as an independent in the next general election to be an MP so lately I have been visiting all of the Parish councils across the new constituency to introduce myself.

What motivated you to become a councillor?

I wanted to see more positive change and investment in Shepton Mallet and I realised that one of the ways to achieve this was through being involved in local government.

What do you enjoy most about the role?

Meeting people and being directly involved in projects such as the development of our play park in Collett Park.

What’s the most frequent issue you deal with in your ward?

Lately it has been the future provision of our leisure that I have had most of my conversations with constituents about. That and pigeon poo in the market cross!

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about becoming a councillor?

Just get involved, the team and other councillors are really friendly and will support you in your new venture!

How can people contact you if they have an issue to raise?

Email is best: cllr.a.mcguire@sheptonmallet-tc.gov.uk
