About this project

In spring of 2021, the Market Place and Town Street will be resurfaced – this means the existing paving will be removed and replaced with a new, modern surface.

The resurfacing project is one of the major commitments made by the council in its newly adopted Town Plan ‘Investing in Shepton’s Future’, as part of a wider commitment to investing in your town. This project aims to improve both the appearance of our town centre and its safety. The choice of a modern resin surface presents the following advantages over the current surface:

• A smooth, continuous surface which limits the risk of trips and falls
• This also means there are many fewer gaps for vegetation to grow in
• The resin comes in a choice of colours which will be matched to the local heritage

This project is jointly funded by Somerset County Council (who are leading on the project), Mendip District Council (via Section 106 funds) and Shepton Mallet Town Council.

About the works

The project works are currently scheduled to begin in February 2021 and last approximately 3 months. Below is a map showing in yellow the area due to be resurfaced.

During the works, there will be some disruption to the area directly concerned by the works and some adjoining areas. However, residents and business owners will be able to access their properties throughout the works. More information about how the works will be carried out, in what phases and what that will mean in terms of access across the area will be available closer to the date.

All parties involved in the project are mindful of the need to minimise the disruption to local residents, businesses, services and visitors to our town. The Town Council will be communicating with the local community regularly in the months before and during the works.
